I manage purchasing for a 300-person manufacturing facility. That's roughly $250,000 a year in MRO orders and a to-do list that never gets shorter. Eaton products show up on my purchase orders more than any other hose brand. Working with Eaton brands takes a little getting used to, since more than one name appears in the catalog.
This checklist is for the non-engineer who still has to order air hoses and hydraulic hose assemblies. It's how to avoid the mistakes I've already made.
Step 1: Start With the Tool's CFM Demand, Not the Hose Diameter
Before you care about 3/8 vs 1/2 air hose CFM, find the tool's CFM at the working pressure. Most pneumatic tools list it in the manual or on the nameplate. 12 CFM at 90 PSI means the tool needs 12 CFM at the inlet, not just at the compressor.
It's tempting to think a bigger diameter solves everything. It doesn't. If the compressor can't supply the volume, a half-inch hose won't magically create air.
Rule of thumb I use:
- 3/8-inch hose for most tools on runs under 50 feet.
- 1/2-inch hose for high-flow tools, long runs, or when you're going through several couplers and fittings.
Short whips are a different story. A 3ft air hose between a drop and a tool is fine if the inside diameter of that whip matches or exceeds the tool inlet. A 3ft air hose with a 1/4-inch ID will choke a tool that needs 12 CFM, no matter what size the main line is.
Step 2: Know Which Eaton Brand You're Actually Ordering
Eaton products aren't all sold under the same name. Eaton brands include Aeroquip and Weatherhead. You can open three catalogs and see three part numbering systems. They're all under the Eaton umbrella, but they don't always cross-reference.
What most people don't realize is that the series is more important than the brand name. The series tells you the pressure rating, the hose construction, and the intended fluid. For a hydraulic hose assembly, that's where you need to be precise.
Write down the exact part number. Don't write Eaton 3ft air hose and hope the vendor figures out the rest. A 3ft air hose with 3/8-inch ID and 3/8-inch NPT ends is very different from one with quick couplers and a smaller ID.
Step 3: Check the Whole Air Path Before You Compare 3/8 vs 1/2
The 3/8 vs 1/2 air hose CFM comparison only works if the rest of the line is the same. If your quick coupler has a 1/4-inch opening, a 1/2-inch hose still bottlenecks at the coupler.
I learned this after ordering 50 feet of 1/2-inch hose for a pressure drop problem. The pressure drop was still there. The coupler was the bottleneck.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the hose is only one part of the pressure drop. Fittings, regulators, filters, and quick couplers all eat CFM. Check the inside diameter of every part in the path. The smallest ID wins.
So when someone asks whether a 3ft air hose can replace a longer hose, the answer depends on the whole path. A 3ft air hose with two 1/4-inch couplers is still a 1/4-inch path.
Step 4: Specify a Hydraulic Hose Assembly Like It's Going to Be Inspected
A hydraulic hose assembly is not just a cut piece of hose with clamps. It's a crimped, pressure-rated product. If you get the length right but the fitting style wrong, it won't connect. If you get the pressure rating wrong, it can fail.
When I order one, I list the ID, length, working pressure, temperature range, fitting style, and end configurations. For Eaton hydraulic parts, the part number usually starts with the hose series and then the fitting series. Ask your distributor to confirm the crimp spec and whether the assembly gets pressure tested.
During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I put every hose requirement into one spreadsheet: line size, working pressure, fitting type, and length. It eliminated most of the back-and-forth.
Looking back, I should have asked for a drawing on the first custom hydraulic hose assembly. At the time, I thought a written description was enough. It wasn't. The first one came back with the wrong end angle. Now I get the part number and a drawing confirmed in writing before ordering.
Step 5: Ask What's NOT Included in the Quote
I'm a big fan of transparent pricing. The lowest first number is often not the lowest final price. The quote that looks cheap might be for bare hose, with fittings, crimping, testing, and crating added later.
I always ask two questions in this order: What's NOT included? and What's the total price? The vendors who can answer both without stalling are the ones I trust.
For a hydraulic hose assembly, the added costs can be significant. For a simple air hose, it's usually just fittings and shipping. But the principle is the same. A 3ft air hose with quick couplers is a different product than a 3ft air hose without them.
Two Mistakes I Have Too Much Experience With
First, don't use pneumatic hose for hydraulic service. Air hose is not hydraulic hose. Hydraulics require wire reinforcement and much higher pressure ratings. Don't swap them.
Second, don't order a brand name instead of a spec. I've ordered Eaton brands without checking whether the hose series met the pressure requirement. That's how you end up with a shelf full of wrong parts.
Bottom Line
The 3/8 vs 1/2 air hose CFM decision comes down to tool demand, run length, fittings, and the smallest ID in the path. If you check those, Eaton products will work fine. If you skip the details, any brand will let you down.
I still double-check every hydraulic hose assembly order before sending it. The vendor who lists all fees upfront, even when the total looks higher, costs less in the end. That's the way I buy.
