6 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Plastic Sheets
I've been handling custom plastic sheet orders for about six years now. In that time, I've personally made (and documented) over a dozen significant mistakes, totaling roughly $8,200 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist so others don't repeat my errors.
Here are six questions I hear from buyers—and a few answers I had to learn the hard way.
1. Is PET polyethylene?
Short answer: No. PET is polyethylene terephthalate, a polyester. Polyethylene (PE) is a different polymer. I know, the acronyms make it confusing.
Back in 2019, I ordered 500 sheets labeled "PET" for a packaging client. When the shipment arrived, the supplier had actually sent HDPE (high-density polyethylene). The client needed clarity and food-grade properties. HDPE is opaque; PET is crystal clear. The result: $1,400 worth of sheets that couldn't be used, plus a 10-day production delay.
Verdict: If you're asking "is PET polyethylene?"—you're not alone. But they're chemically distinct. PET is what water bottles are made of; polyethylene is what milk jugs are made of. For transparent thermoforming, you want PET.
2. What about ABS? (And yes, "login ABS" is a thing)
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a tough, impact-resistant plastic. We use it for industrial trays and protective covers. But I've seen customers confuse it with ABS as in "anti-lock braking system" or a login credential.
One time, a client emailed me asking for the "ABS login." I spent an hour trying to reset his portal password before realizing he meant ABS material specifications. He wanted the technical data sheet for ABS sheets. That's when I learned to always clarify: "Are you asking about the material or the access?"
Now our team includes a line: "For ABS material properties, see page 14. For portal login issues, contact support." Saved us at least two similar mix-ups since then.
3. How do I find Eaton OEM parts in Raleigh?
Raleigh is one of our key distribution points for custom-cut OEM parts—especially for industrial equipment manufacturers in the region. But here's a mistake I made: assuming every part needed to come from the Raleigh warehouse.
In 2022, I routed a rush order for 200 ABS sheets through Raleigh when the material was actually in stock at our Charlotte facility. 5. What on earth is "PET coyote"?
I get this question about once a quarter. A few years ago, a buyer sent an RFQ with the line item "PET coyote." I stared at it for 10 minutes. Coyote? Is that a brand? A color? A joke?
Turns out, they meant PET with a coyote-brown color (a standard RAL shade). But their keyboard autocorrected "coyote" from "coyote brown." We actually produced a sample, and it looked pretty good for outdoor signage. To be fair, the confusion was partly our fault—our catalog didn't list color names clearly. Now we make sure every color option includes both the name and RAL number.
Bottom line: There's no such material as "PET coyote." But if you need a warm brown PET sheet, just specify RAL 8003 or send a Pantone reference.
6. Which plastic should I choose: PVC, PET, PETG, or PS?
That's the million-dollar question. Honestly, there's no universal best—only what fits your application. I went back and forth between PVC and PETG for a client's display stand for two weeks. PVC offered lower cost and better chemical resistance, but PETG gave superior clarity and food contact compliance. Ultimately we chose PETG because the stand would hold packaged food samples. The client was thrilled.
Here's a rough guide based on my mistakes:
- PVC – good for general packaging, signs, and construction. Low cost, but not food-grade.
- PET – great transparency, recyclable, good for thermoforming. Not as impact-resistant as PETG.
- PETG – tougher than PET, excellent clarity, FDA-compliant. Higher cost.
- PS (polystyrene) – cheap, rigid, easy to die-cut. Brittle, not for heavy-duty use.
- ABS – impact-resistant, good for industrial trays and enclosures. Opaque.
If your application is very specific—like a medical device cover—consider PP or ABS. But for 80% of B2B needs, PETG or PVC will do the job. I learned this after ordering 50 sheets of PS for a client who needed them for outdoor exposure. They warped in three weeks. $450 mistake.
