I coordinate rush orders for sheet and roll products at Eaton. After 12 years and more than 200 urgent material requests, I can tell you that most emergencies are not really about speed. They are about material identity. Someone says plastic, someone else says resin, and by the time the order reaches a supplier those two words can mean two completely different products.
This guide is how I quietly handle that. There is no single best material, but there is always a best first question: what shape does the finished part need to be?
I split urgent requests into three branches:
- Flat or lightly shaped: You are probably buying sheet, film, or roll stock.
- Liquid that cures: You are probably buying a two-part resin, like polyurethane or epoxy.
- Round, flexible, and pressured: You need a hose-grade material with a real specification.
Start with format, not with resin
Resin is one of the most overused words in this industry. It can mean plastic pellets for extrusion, a roll of finished PET film, a liquid coating for a bathtub, or the raw polymer inside a hydraulic hose. If a customer asks me for resin, I honestly do not know what they need until we identify the form.
That sounds basic, but I see more procurement mistakes from this one mix-up than from bad pricing. A customer once asked for resin for a packaging job. What they actually needed was sheet stock with a print-treated surface. Those two paths lead to entirely different quotes.
Branch 1: Flat and wide? Start with sheet or roll
If the part is a printed insert, box lid, folder, display board, or packaging tray, you are in sheet or roll territory. This is where PET, PETG, PVC, PP, and foam board live.
PET sheet is the workhorse for clear printing and forming. PETG is easier to thermoform, so I recommend it for blisters, clamshells, and display trays. Rigid PVC is still the practical choice for binding covers and stationery when you want stiffness without a premium price. If the part needs a reliable hinge, polypropylene is usually better because it survives repeated folding.
One warning I repeat constantly: if you are going to print on the material, check the surface treatment before you buy. In January 2025, public online printer quotes for 1,000 flyers were roughly $80 to $150, so the margin on a cheap sheet order disappears fast if the ink does not stick. A treated PET or corona-treated surface costs a little more. The cheapest untreated sheet is a bad deal when your printed layer fails after the first bend.
If your real application is agricultural or outdoor, do not assume that the clear PET film you see in packaging will work there. PVC panels or polypropylene sheet are more likely to handle UV exposure, cleaning chemicals, and rough handling.
Branch 2: Bathtub coating or small cast parts? Compare polyurethane resin vs epoxy resin
I get calls from people searching for bathtub resin. They are not looking for a sheet of plastic. They are looking for something they can mix and apply as a coating or repair layer.
In that branch, the real comparison is polyurethane resin vs epoxy resin. Here is how I explain it to buyers:
Epoxy resin tends to be harder, more chemical-resistant, and very good at bonding to clean surfaces. It is often my first choice for filling chips, creating a smooth topcoat, or making rigid cast parts.
Polyurethane resin is usually tougher and more flexible. It handles impact and movement better, which matters if the base material expands, flexes, or gets bumped. For a bathtub that moves slightly under load or a part that gets repeated contact, polyurethane is often the more durable route.
The key is not brand preference. The key is knowing whether the job needs hardness or elasticity. And surface preparation matters more than the price per liter. I have watched expensive coatings fail because the substrate was not cleaned or because the wrong primer was used.
One caution about the term resin crowns. If you mean dental crowns, do not substitute industrial epoxy or polyurethane. Dental materials are regulated and need biocompatibility data. A conversation about resin crowns in the dental sense is very different from a conversation about cast caps or protective covers.
Branch 3: Long, flexible, and under pressure? Work from a spec, not a material name
When the component is a hose, tube, seal, or profile, I stop asking about resin type and start asking for a hydraulic hose specification.
Why? Because polyurethane alone is not a full material identity. A soft polyurethane might be right for a low-pressure tube. A rigid polyurethane might work for a wear liner. Neither will tell you if the hose survives contact with mineral oil, hot water, or UV exposure.
For hydraulic and pneumatic applications, the useful questions are:
- What is the working pressure?
- What is the inner diameter and outer diameter?
- What temperature range does the system see?
- What fluids or chemicals touch the hose?
- Does the hose need to resist flexing, abrasion, or weather exposure?
If a hose is described only as polyurethane, that is not a specification. Polyester-based polyurethane is common for oil resistance. Polyether-based polyurethane tends to perform better in water and humid conditions. If you buy whichever is cheapest without confirming the chemistry, you might save a little today and replace the hose twice this year.
A low quote is only a real deal when the material family matches the environment. I have seen that lesson repeated many times, and I do not mean in a vague way. I mean in the way where a $300 price difference becomes a $1,200 field visit, lost production time, and a second part order.

- If it is a hose or flexible component, send a real specification and confirm the polymer chemistry before you compare price.
When you are in a rush, the fastest path is not to grab the first available material. It is to identify the branch correctly, then get a quote for the right grade.
