I coordinate rush orders at Eaton, a plastic sheet and roll manufacturer. In the last two years, I've processed more than 200 emergency quotes and deliveries, and a surprising number of those calls start with the same question: HDPE vs PET. What We're Actually Comparing
HDPE is high-density polyethylene. Think milk jugs, cutting boards, chemical tanks. PET is polyethylene terephthalate. Think beverage bottles, clear clamshells, thermoforming film. Both come in sheets and rolls, and both get used in packaging, printing, construction, and stationery. But they are not interchangeable.
The letters cause a lot of the confusion. PET plastic and 'pet' as in animals have nothing to do with each other. Actually, the overlap is just a coincidence. That doesn't stop people from asking about PET when they mean 'pet care' packaging, or assuming HDPE will work because it's 'stronger' for an entirely different project.
The Key Differences When You Need It Fast
1. Heat and Forming
PET handles heat better than HDPE. The melting point of PET is about 250 degrees C, while HDPE is around 130 degrees C. If you want a more precise number, look at the Vicat softening point (ASTM D1525) on the material data sheet. That tells you where a part starts to soften under load, which is closer to real use than melting point alone. PET holds a crisp, detailed shape in thermoforming. HDPE is softer and more forgiving, which makes it easier to weld or machine, but it can sag if you push the temperature too far.
If your product sits near a heat source or needs to keep its shape, PET is usually the safer call. That said, I've seen HDPE used in hot-water systems because of its chemical resistance. There's always a trade-off. At least, that's been my experience with deadline-critical packaging orders. (mental note: remind customers that 'plastic' is not a single material.)
2. Chemical and Moisture Resistance
HDPE is a workhorse. It shrugs off water, most acids, and a lot of solvents. PET is different. It handles food acids and oils well, but strong bases and hot, humid conditions can break it down over time. For a pet care tray that holds wet food, PET is fine. For a container that has to survive cleaning chemicals, choose HDPE.
This is also where material pricing can trick people. HDPE is usually cheaper per pound, but PET can be used in thinner gauges for the same stiffness. In one February 2025 quote, PET was about 18% higher per pound than HDPE, but the PET part ended up roughly 7% cheaper because we could down-gauge. It's not a rule, just a reminder to compare per part, not per pound.
3. Toughness and Flexibility
HDPE bends, flexes, and absorbs impact without shattering. PET is stiffer and stronger per unit of thickness, but it can crack under repeated bending. If you've ever tried to repair an air hose with something you found in the workshop, you know the difference: a patch needs flex, not just strength. For that kind of repair, HDPE is closer to what you want—if the pressure and temperature are within safe limits. And if the hose is an Eaton hydraulic hose, order the actual part from the hose company; don't improvise.
4. Lead Time and Availability
In our plant, PET rolls and sheets are usually faster for clear packaging orders because we run those materials more often. HDPE is faster for industrial colors and thicker sheets. But that's not a universal rule. Lead times shift with the season, the color, and the exact thickness.
When I compared our Q1 and Q2 rush orders side by side—same profiles, different material calls—I finally understood why the material choice, not speed, caused most of our delivery misses. It wasn't the courier. It wasn't the sheet stock. It was mismatched expectations.
In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before a product launch. They said 'PET roll.' I heard 'clear PET roll.' They were picturing a white HDPE roll. The spec sheet was correct; the conversation was wrong. Result: we paid $800 extra in rush fees and still missed the first launch slot. That's when I created a one-page material checklist: temperature, chemical exposure, flexibility, color, thickness, quantity. I should have done it after the first mix-up, not the third.

Two More Things People Forget
Food Contact and Odor
Both HDPE and PET can be food-safe in the right grades. The difference is in how they behave. PET is naturally clear, so it's common for packaging that needs to show the product. HDPE often comes in a milky or colored form and can absorb odor more easily than PET. In pet care packaging, buyers often pick PET for the look and HDPE for the durability. Neither choice is wrong unless you ignore the other requirements.
UV and Outdoor Life
HDPE is inherently more UV-resistant than PET, but both will degrade eventually if left in direct sun. Additives can help. If the product lives outdoors, ask for a UV-stabilized grade. If it lives indoors, it doesn't matter as much. That sounds obvious, but it's one of the most common gaps I see in rush orders.
How to Choose in 90 Seconds
- Choose PET when you need clarity, food-safe thermoforming, or a glossy printed surface. It's also the usual default for pet care packaging—clear trays, folded cartons, and display blisters.
- Choose HDPE when you need chemical resistance, outdoor impact strength, or a tough, weldable sheet. It isn't as pretty, but it's harder to kill.
- When you're not sure and the deadline is hard, pick up the phone. A two-minute conversation beats three email rounds.
The goal isn't to prove PET is better than HDPE. The goal is to get the right material to your dock before the deadline finds you.
The Industry Has Changed; The Fundamentals Haven't
Five years ago, a custom PET roll with a specific thickness and color set could easily take two or three weeks. Today, more suppliers keep intermediate stock and can ship in days. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. But the fundamentals haven't changed: know your temperature, chemical exposure, mechanical loading, and lead time.
