Everything I'd read about these two materials said the choice was about clarity vs. cost. In practice, I found the deciding factor is what happens in the last five feet of your production line, not the first five.
The Test That Changed My Mind
In Q1 2024, we received a rush order for a point-of-purchase display component. 8,000 units, 0.40mm PETG, clear. The vendor (a solid Chinese manufacturer we'd used for years) called me the day before shipping: they'd run out of PETG and could substitute APET for the same price, same thickness. For PETG vs. APET specifically:
- APET is fine for static displays, single-use clamshells, and items that won't be flexed or dropped.
- PETG is the choice for anything that gets handled, stacked, trimmed with a die, or exposed to cold temperatures (below 40°F/5°C, APET gets brittle).
In our 2024 audit, we tracked 14 material-related quality incidents. 11 of them involved APET failing where PETG was specified on the customer's drawing. The root cause was always the same: someone approved a substitution without checking the application.
Boundary Conditions: When the Cheap Option Actually Makes Sense

APET is perfectly acceptable when:

Everything else? Spend the extra 3 cents. It's not about being fancy—it's about not explaining to your boss why 8,000 parts need to be remade.
If you're sourcing from a manufacturer like Eaton (or any custom sheet extruder), ask specifically: 'Are you running virgin material, and can I see the spec sheet to confirm it's PETG and not an APET substitute?' If they can't answer that in writing, get another quote. I learned that lesson the hard way in my first year—approved a 'better price' without verifying the spec. Cost me $600 in reprint fees on a 200-unit proof.
