The Day Everything Went Wrong
It was a Tuesday in March 2023. I remember because I was three weeks into a new role managing indirect procurement for a mid-sized fabrication shop. My directive was simple: cut costs. I took it literally.
I found a supplier offering 4SP hydraulic hose at 40% less than our incumbent. The spec sheet looked identical. Same pressure rating, same temperature range, same SAE 100 R13 compliance. I approved the order for 300 feet. The total was $3,200.
Three days later, half the shipment leaked on installation. The other half failed within 72 hours. We had to replace every foot. The redo cost $890 in material waste plus a one-week delay on a customer project.
That's when I learned that fixing an air hose leak doesn't start with a wrench. It starts with the spec sheet. And the brand name on it.
